London Probation Trust is part of the National
Offender Management Service (NOMS). We employ 3,000 staff
across London, and at any one time supervise 45,000 offenders
across London’s 32 boroughs. We work alongside other criminal
justice agencies, including the police, prisons and courts to
protect the public by supervising offenders in the
community.
We are committed to:
- cutting crime through reducing reoffending
- protecting the public
- working with diverse, local partnerships
- enforcing community sentences
- delivering quality, innovative services to influence positive
change in offenders' behaviour for the benefit of local
communities.
Probation Officers supervise offenders aged 18
and over:
- Who have been sentenced by the courts to a community
order or suspended sentence order, or
- Who have been released from prison on licence to serve
the rest of their sentence in the community.
The role of the Probation Officer is to make
sure offenders:
- Complete their sentence as the court intended and
- Inform the courts if they don’t
- Those on licence may be recalled to prison if they fail to meet
the terms of the licence.
Probation staff work with offenders to help
them stop committing further crimes. Their work contributes to
crime prevention and public safety in the capital by reducing
reoffending and managing the risk of harm offenders pose.
Additionally, they assist courts by writing
reports on convicted offenders so that the judge or magistrate has
a full picture of the offender before passing sentence.
Some probation staff are based in prisons,
helping to prepare prisoners for release. Others work with the
victims of the most serious crimes.
