Offenders with significant drug problems may be sentenced to a Drugs Rehabilitation Requirement (DRR) as part of their Community Order.
The DRR is designed to reduce offenders' abuse of drugs and the crimes they commit to fund their drug abuse. Offenders are tested to monitor their use of drugs, and are also given treatment and counselling.
A DRR can last between six and 36 months - depending on the seriousness of the offence. The courts will be updated on the progress of the offender, and if they have failed to comply with the DRR they will be asked to return to court. The court may then decide to either give the offender additional requirements to their order, make their current requirements more difficult or send them to prison.
London Probation also runs the Addressing Substance Related Offending programme - which helps offenders stop their substance misuse.
