Offending Behaviour Programmes

Programme. Woman tutoring a Group Programme.

London Probation provides a range of specifically tailored  Programmes for offenders, designed to address offending behaviour. They usually involve group sessions where people who have committed a particular offence - such as driving while disqualified or violence against a partner - are required to attend a group to examine their problems as part of their Community Order.

Groups are led by specially trained probation staff. Activities may include describing or acting out the offence. Where the offence has a direct victim, there will be exercises which put offenders in the victim's place and help them understand the impact of the offence.

London Probation provides the following evidence-based programmes designed to reduce re-offending.

Think First
Designed for offenders with established patterns of offending. It challenges offenders to look at the reasons for offending and work to develop skills to avoid re-offending.

Community Sex-offender Groupwork (CSOGP)
Designed for offenders convicted of a sexual offence. The programme is designed to reduce offending and protect the public by enabling offenders to develop insight into their thinking, feeling and behaviour and establish control over their offending.

Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme (IDAP)
Suitable for male perpetrators of domestic violence who are assessed as being of medium to high risk of re-offending and harming current or previous female partners.

Aggression Replacement Training (ART)
Suitable for offenders convicted of offences of assault, serious public order or criminal damage. Offenders on this programme will have exhibited a pattern of violent or aggressive behaviour and be considered as medium or high risk to the public. Offenders must demonstrate some motivation to change and some recognition of the unacceptability of their behaviour.

Addressing Substance Related Offending (ASRO)
Aims to reduce offending behaviour by tackling the drug and alcohol use of offenders. This is a highly structured programme run by probation staff working alongside specialist drug and alcohol workers.

Skills for Life
Every offender is screened for "Skills for Life" - the basic skills somebody needs to gain employment. If they are assessed as needing help with literacy and numeracy, offenders are offered tuition leading to a qualification and/or support to follow further training.

Drink Impaired Drivers (DID)
Aims to reduce risk of re-offending by confronting offenders with the facts relating to drinking and driving. It is designed to help offenders develop skills for thinking about and solving problems.

Workwise
This programme is designed to get offenders into work and is run in partnerships with Jobcentreplus and other agencies.  Offenders are given advice about disclosure of convictions, CV writing, job search, and contact with employers. The programme also includes groupwork to help offenders improve their employability and motivation to find work.

Cognitive Skills Booster
This programme is for men and women who have completed a general offending behaviour programme such as Think First.  It challenges the participant to re-examine the reasons for his/her offending and works with him/her to develop and practice new skills to avoid re-offending.
