“London Probation Trust helped me get my life
together.”
Probation is often the forgotten linchpin in the criminal
justice system.
Ask most people about crime and punishment and they will likely
mention the police, prosecution and prison. What they may not
realise is that probation staff are, more often than not, involved
right the way through – from recommending sentence proposals to
judges and magistrates to assessing offenders’ progress in prison;
to
developing (and running) alternative ‘community’ sentences and
making sure offenders comply with their licence, or other,
conditions.
This end-to-end involvement is the reason probation plays such a
huge role in both the punishment and rehabilitation of offenders.
It also means we have access to a lot of interesting case studies,
and we will be publishing more of them in the coming
months.
