Home Secretary Visits London Probation
15th April 2005
Beckenham and Penge Sea Cadet unit was chosen by hundreds of people in Bromley as the area to be spruced up as part of the national Clean-Up Week campaign. On Thursday 17th March the Home Secretary visited a team of offenders, sentenced to compulsory unpaid work as part of their community sentence, as they carried out repairs and maintenance work on this building enjoyed by much of Bromley's youth.
Roger Hill, then Chief Officer of London Probation said: "Community sentencing already has a hugely positive effect on Bromley and every year over 700,000 hours of compulsory unpaid work is provided by offenders in London. This is a great opportunity for residents to have a say in what they believe will make their lives and that of their families and neighbours easier and safer."
Mark Ryan, Chief Petty Officer of Beckenham and Penge Sea Cadet Corp said: "The cadets, staff and unit management committee are over whelmed at being chosen by the local public to receive the assistance of the London Probation in helping to maintain our unit. We have had offenders do some ground work before and they worked very hard and very well with the staff - this award will enable us to do a lot more".
