Thameslink and London Probation Brighten Up Tooting Station

11th October 2005

Platform 1 at Tooting station is to receive a stunning makeover with the introduction of hand painted murals that span the entire length of the wall.

The murals, designed by well known artist Fiona Glaister have been painted by offenders working under the supervision of  London Probation as part of the 'Community Payback' scheme.

Depicting famous London Landmarks, the murals will be formally unveiled on Platform 1 on Thursday 28th July at 11am.

This unique project is the culmination of many months of hard work by the artist and offenders alike. Peter Wilkings, Quality Assurance Manager for London Probation's Community Payback scheme said: "An offender was so proud to be involved on the mural she wants to show her daughter her work at the station. Several offenders have said they want to get back into art and painting."

David Scott, London Probation's Chief Officer said: "This project fits in with London Probation's aim of protecting the people of London. Making this (Tooting station) a nice environment will help to reduce the fear of crime and should help stop this area being vandalised."

Thameslink's External Liaison Manager, Martyn McCormack said "we are very proud to be associated with this project. The old graffiti style murals were looking very tired and in need of replacement. These murals look fantastic and I am sure that Thameslink customers will enjoy them very much indeed."
