Probation staff are based in every Crown Court and
Magistrates’ Court in London. Our staff
produce reports on offenders to help judges and magistrates
decide on the most appropriate sentences. The report will
include:
- An analysis of the offence
- Background information about the offender
- An assessment of the likelihood of the offender committing
further crimes and the risk of harm to the public
- An assessment of the offender’s suitability for the available
sentences.

The court report will be in one of three formats:
- Standard Delivery Report – produced within 15 days
- Fast Delivery Report – produced on the day or within five
days
- Oral Report – produced on the day of request.
The report will conclude with a recommendation
of a sentence but the sentencing decision rests with the judge or
magistrate.
